Former FSA Chair Receives Top Award

Sir John Krebs, (right) former chair of The Food Standards Agency for five years has been given this year's Special Award from The Society of Food Hygiene Technology (SOFHT) and is shown receiving the award from Society Vice Chairman and Membership Secretary, Jonathon Bayne (left).

Sir John Krebs' was given the Special Award in recognition of his vast contribution to the food industry. His work has involved increasing public confidence in food safety and giving evidence to consumers based on sound scientific evidence. His strategic plan at the FSA 2001-2006 covered reducing food borne illness, promoting healthy eating, promoting informative labeling, promoting best practice within the food industry and improving enforcement of food law, all aspects which have now been embraced by the industry as a whole and set the foundations for future generations.

On receiving the Award Sir John said

"I am delighted and honoured to receive this award, which I see as a recognition of the work of the Food Standards Agency as a whole. For more than 25 years, the SOFHT has been at the forefront of work to promote safer food. The Food Standards Agency shares many of the SOFHT's objectives and during my time as Chairman I was most grateful to the Society for its support and advice on key policy issues".

Sir John's award was given as part of the annual SOFHT awards that recognise best practice in the food industry. The 2004 award went to Prof Hugh Pennington.
